Product Review: Myles Apparel Everyday, Momentum, and Switchback Shorts

**All opinions are my own.

The Hunt for the Perfect Short

I live in Houston, TX. That means 90% of the year it's hot and sticky outside. I’m extremely active and am constantly working out in the gym, getting in a run or bike, or outside on the job as a freelance photographer most days of the week. So I’m almost always on the move.

So a few years ago, I did a deep dive online to find the apparel and shorts that balanced comfort with performance — and looked flattering at the same time. If there was a short out there that balanced both style and functionality, I was going to find it. I prioritized three different features:

  • Stylish — look, I’m not going to win any awards for my outfits. I like to keep it simple. So basic, versatile, and an athletic-cut (I’m a slimmer guy) were a must.
  • Breathable and moisture wicking — those who know me know I sweat a lot. Like an obscene amount. So I need quick-drying shorts, especially in Texas weather.
  • Practical — I like to keep my closet simple. Y’all know Marie Kondo, right? So my approach has been to invest in fewer, higher-quality items that can be used for a variety of looks and purposes.

After a lot of research, I came upon Myles Apparel, an activewear brand based out of San Francisco (a quick disclaimer: this is my honest take on these items and I stand behind my recommendation. I’ve recently partnered with Myles to help them create content, but I’m not being paid to promote their product in this post. I've been wearing Myles gear for years).

Myles has several different lines of shorts, and I’ve put them through the wringer over the last few months and years. With their minimalist design, durability, and athletic fit, they’ve become a staple in my wardrobe. From sunup to sundown, chances are you’ll find me in one of these Myles styles, whether it’s a morning trip to the gym, a bike or run along the bayou, or an evening out with friends, there’s a short for every occasion. Here’s my breakdown of their Everyday Shorts (comfort, casual, and performance), Momentum Shorts (performance and workout), and Switchback Shorts (running and fitness).

Everyday Shorts

Overview and Features

One of the first aspects that drew me to the Everyday shorts was the minimalist design. I can wear these with casual shoes or tennis shoes, and make them work with almost any outfit. They’ve got two font pockets and a secure back pocket, handy for storing keys or a phone. It’s definitely a more tailored fit, and they’re available in 6", 8", and 10" Inseam Lengths.

Fit and Performance

The material on these is what Myles calls a “Double-Weave Fabric” which gives it a nice thickness while not sacrificing stretch and comfort. When I workout, I like my shorts extremely light and thin (oh, and did I mention they’re water resistant?). But if I’m going out, they need some definition so I can style them and I know they’re thick and supportive enough for my keys, phone, and wallet. These shorts check all of those boxes: extremely comfortable and light, but durable and robust enough to wear with a button down or polo.

Final Thoughts

These are my go-to shorts for going out on hot summer nights in Houston. Since I have the Momentum and Switchback shorts, I don’t typically use them to workout, but wouldn’t hesitate to use them in a pinch.

Value: ★★★★★

Perfect For: Those who value comfort and minimalism. You could live in this one short for a workout, a hike, or hanging out with friends throughout a single day. They can be pricey, but because of their versatility, they’re fantastic value.

Momentum Shorts (No Liner)

Intro and Features

I’ve had my OG Momentum Shorts for 3+ years and they haven’t let me down. These are hands down my favorite shorts to wear throughout the week. I’m in the gym most days of the week; whether I’m lifting, cycling, or jogging, these shorts are extremely comfortable and versatile.

Fit and Performance

The lightweight and breathable fabric keep me cool during workouts, while the stretchy nature of the material allows for unrestricted movement. I have the version with no liner and typically wear them to the gym or for a run with the Myles compression shorts. I sweat a ton, and not only are these shorts water repellant, they also don't hold any odors.

They’re also extremely durable. I’ve had a few pairs for almost three years now and there’s minimal signs of wear. Yeah, they’re a bit pricier. But you’re going to get great mileage out of them. Even at full-price, I’d say they’re worth it because of how well they fit and how they’re built to last. If I’m going to make the investment at this price range, I want to know they’ll last a few years; these shorts have excelled and have withstood intense workouts and rough outdoor adventures with minimal signs of wear and tear.

Quality: ★★★★★

Value: ★★★★

Perfect For: Those who are constantly hitting the gym or working out. You’ll get performance and comfort, plus a short that will withstand a lot of wear and tear. Yeah, they're pricey, but they're gonna last you a long, long time.

Switchback Shorts

Intro and Features

After I bought the Momentum Shorts three years ago for working out, I knew I had to give the Switchback Shorts a try for running. They've got a breathable nylon fabric with a hidden side pocket for storing keys (and in a pinch, a small phone like an iPhone Mini).

Fit and Performance

Soccer is my main sport but I've done a few full and half marathons in my time. These have been my favorite running shorts by a long shot. Last year, I ran the Houston Half Marathon with the Switchback Shorts and they were incredible. No chafing. No riding up my thighs. A comfortable ride throughout (although they couldn't help me hit Eliud Kipchoge speeds, but hey, you can't have it all). What's made these shorts stand out relative to other running shorts is that they're insanely quick-drying and breathable. In Houston, it's extremely humid. So I've worn shorts that give me some serious swamp ass. Not these guys. Even in 90 degrees and Houston humidity, they're comfortable for speed workouts or long runs.

Final Thoughts

Quality: ★★★★★

Value: ★★★★

Perfect For: The avid runner, whether it's for speed or distance. You'll get comfort even in the hottest, most humid conditions.
